What this number means
This calculator puts a dollar value on a single ranking move so you can decide whether the keyword deserves effort.
Monthly click uplift is the extra traffic the keyword earns at the target position, minus what it earns today. A small uplift means the keyword is either low-volume or already well-positioned — spend your effort elsewhere.
Monthly and annual revenue uplift convert those clicks into money with your conversion rate and average order value. This is the number to put in a business case or client proposal: it is the annual prize for winning this keyword.
Annual paid-equivalent value prices the same uplift at your Google Ads CPC. If the annual revenue uplift is $4,000 but the paid equivalent is $400, the keyword is cheap to buy and expensive to earn — that comparison belongs in every SEO-vs-PPC discussion.
The formula
In plain English: the calculator estimates how many clicks the keyword gets at each position using average click-through rates, takes the difference, and converts the extra clicks into revenue and paid-search-equivalent cost.
Clicks now = Monthly search volume × CTR at current position
Clicks at target = Monthly search volume × CTR at target position
Monthly click uplift = max(0, Clicks at target − Clicks now)
Monthly revenue uplift = Click uplift × Conversion rate × Average order value
Annual revenue uplift = Monthly revenue uplift × 12
Annual paid-equivalent value = Click uplift × Average CPC × 12
CTR benchmarks used: positions 1–3: 18.1%; 4–7: 5.9%; 8–10: 3.0%; 11–20: 1.2%; 21–50: 0.4%; 50+: 0.05%. These are editable benchmarks with cited sources on the methodology page.
Worked example
Take a commercial keyword with 1,000 monthly searches, currently ranking in positions 11–20, with a goal of the top 3.
- Clicks now = 1,000 × 0.012 = 12 clicks/month
- Clicks at target = 1,000 × 0.181 = 181 clicks/month
- Monthly click uplift = 181 − 12 = 169 clicks/month
- Monthly revenue uplift = 169 × 0.02 × $100 = $338/month
- Annual revenue uplift = $338 × 12 = $4,056/year
- Annual paid-equivalent = 169 × $2.00 × 12 = $4,056/year
The symmetry is a coincidence of the round inputs, but the takeaway is real: for this keyword, a year of top-3 rankings is worth roughly $4,000 in revenue and would cost roughly $4,000 to replicate in Google Ads. If winning the keyword needs three months of focused work, the payback math is strongly positive.
Assumptions and limitations
- This is a single-keyword view. Real campaigns move keyword portfolios; aggregate the uplift across your target set for the full picture.
- CTR figures are averages across many studies. Branded keywords, navigational queries, and SERPs crowded with ads or AI Overviews can differ sharply.
- Position buckets are ranges — the top of a bucket earns more clicks than the bottom.
- Conversion rate is assumed identical at both positions. Higher positions can attract broader, less qualified traffic.
- No ramp is modeled: this calculator shows the steady-state value at the target position, not how many months it takes to get there. Use the Traffic & Revenue Forecaster for the timed view.
- All outputs are planning scenarios, not guarantees. Google states third-party tools have no access to internal ranking data.
