What this number means

Benchmark CTR is what the average result earns at your position - 2.75% at position 8.5 with the defaults. Your click gap is the difference between benchmark clicks and your clicks: 275 clicks/month at the defaults (1,375 benchmark vs 1,100 actual).

Value of the gap prices those missing clicks at your CPC: $962.50/month, $11,550/year. That is the prize for better titles and meta descriptions - no new rankings required. If your CTR already beats the benchmark, the calculator says so and shows your surplus instead.

The formula

In plain English: benchmark clicks minus your clicks, valued at your CPC.

  • Benchmark CTR = interpolated from the curve (1: 27%, 2: 15%, 3: 10%, 4: 7%, 5: 5.5%, 6: 4.5%, 7: 3.5%, 8: 3%, 9: 2.5%, 10: 2%, 11-20: 1%)
  • Expected clicks = Impressions x Benchmark CTR
  • Your clicks = Impressions x Your CTR
  • Click gap = Expected clicks - Your clicks
  • Monthly gap value = Click gap x Average CPC; Annual = Monthly x 12

Worked example

A SaaS blog averages position 8.5 across 50,000 monthly impressions with a 2.2% CTR - 1,100 clicks. The benchmark for position 8.5 is 2.75%, or 1,375 clicks. The gap is 275 clicks/month, worth $962.50/month ($11,550/year) at a $3.50 CPC.

Rewriting ten title tags to lift CTR from 2.2% to the 2.75% benchmark captures that value with zero link building and zero new content. That is why CTR optimization is usually the highest-ROI SEO work available: the impressions already exist.

Assumptions and limitations

  • The benchmark is an average. Branded queries, SERP features, and standout titles move real CTRs far from the curve in both directions.
  • CPC values the click, roughly. Paid clicks and organic clicks convert differently; treat the dollar figure as directional.
  • Fractional positions interpolate. An 8.5 average blends positions 8 and 9, which smooths over real variance.
  • CTR gains have ceilings. You cannot out-click position 1 forever; the gap shrinks as you improve.
  • All figures are planning estimates.
