How to forecast SEO revenue without lying
Scenario ranges, honest language and the mistakes that destroy credibility — a forecaster's code of conduct.
SEO forecasts have a credibility problem because most of them are single numbers presented with false precision. Here is how to forecast honestly.
Always show a range
Use the Traffic Forecaster and report all three scenarios: Conservative, Expected, Aggressive. Lead with Conservative when money is on the line. A forecast of “$40k–$90k, central case $62k” is more credible — and more useful — than “$62,400”.
State what must be true
Every forecast rests on conditions: positions achieved, CTR holding, conversion rate stable. List them next to the numbers. If a condition fails, the forecast is void — say that upfront and nobody can accuse you of moving goalposts later.
Common lies to avoid
- Presenting the aggressive scenario as the plan.
- Assuming month-one rankings (use the ramp).
- Applying head-term CTR to long-tail keyword sets.
- Forgetting that costs start immediately while revenue ramps.
Revisit quarterly
A forecast is a living document. Every quarter, replace assumptions with actuals — real Search Console CTR, real conversion rates — and re-run. Forecasts that never get updated are fiction with extra steps.
