What this number means
Incremental clicks are the clicks the SEO program creates above today's baseline: for each keyword and month, forecast clicks at the ramped rank minus clicks if the current rank never moved, summed across the portfolio. Traffic value prices those clicks at paid-search CPC rates. Revenue applies your conversion rate and customer value; gross profit applies your margin. ROI = (cumulative gross profit − investment) / investment. Breakeven is the first month cumulative profit covers cumulative cost. Three scenarios scale the CTR curve by 0.7x (Conservative), 1.0x (Base) and 1.3x (Aggressive).
The formula
In plain English: rankings climb linearly from current to target position over the ramp period; each month's position converts to clicks via our published CTR curve; money follows from your conversion economics.
- Rank(month) = Current + (Target − Current) x min(month / Ramp, 1)
- Clicks(keyword, month) = Volume x CTR(Rank) x Scenario multiplier
- Incremental clicks = Forecast clicks − Baseline clicks (current rank held flat)
- Revenue = Incremental clicks x Conversion rate x Customer value
- Gross profit = Revenue x Gross margin
- ROI = (Cumulative gross profit − Investment) / Investment
Worked example
Worked example (B2B SaaS preset, base case): 8 keywords totaling ~148,000 monthly searches, current ranks 18–47, targets 4–10, CPCs $8.80–$14.20. With $5,000/month cost, 2% conversion, $500 customer value, 70% margin and a 6-month ramp over 12 months, the base case produces roughly 48,000 incremental clicks worth ~$590,000 in traffic value, ~$336,000 gross profit against a $60,000 investment — about 460% ROI with breakeven in month 3. The conservative case roughly halves the profit; the aggressive case adds about 30%. Load the preset and change any assumption to see the business case move.
Assumptions and limitations
What this forecast assumes — and what it does not:
- Rankings move linearly toward targets. Real rankings move in steps, stalls and jumps; algorithm updates are not modeled.
- The CTR curve is a benchmark average. Your actual CTR varies with SERP features, brand strength and intent.
- Search volume and CPC are estimates that drift over time; seasonality is not modeled.
- Conversion rate is held constant — in practice it varies by keyword intent and landing page.
- Keyword cannibalization and portfolio overlap are not modeled; treat overlapping keywords as one.
- This is a planning framework (methodology v1.0), not a prediction of Google behavior. Validate against Search Console after launch.
